Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ma Zhaoxu's Remarks on Obama to Meet with Dalai
2010/02/03

Q: On February 2, in answering questions raised by journalists, White House Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton responded that in meeting with Chinese leaders last year when he was in China for a visit, President Obama said that he would meet with the Dalai Lama, and he intends to do so.  How do you comment on that?

A: China is firmly opposed to Dalai's visit to the US and the contact between the US leader and Dalai in whatever name or form. Our position is consistent and unequivacal. During President Obama's visit to China last November, the two leaders talked about the Tibet-related issue. The Chinese leader elaborated on China's solemn position against any foreign head of state or government officials meeting with Dalai, and requested the US in explicit terms not to allow "Tibetan Independence" separatist forces to engage in anti-China splitting activities on the US territory. We urge the US to fully recognize the high sensitivity of the Tibet-related issue and prudently and properly handle relevant issues in order to protect China-US relations from being further undermined.
